New book by Disney layout artist of "Beauty and the Beast" and "The Lion King," Ed Ghertner
Back when I was an assistant producer on the TV show, "TaleSpin," my boss was the producer Ed Ghertner, but Ed had greater things in store for him. He went to work at Disney Feature Animation on films like "Beauty and the Beast," "The Lion King," "Hunchback of Notre Dame" and others. I remember him telling me of his fantastic business trips to places like Paris for research. Now, that's a business trip!
What always struck me as interesting back in 1991 is that all the "Making of Beauty and the Beast" news reports and television specials were saying how the beautiful ballroom was done with computers. They failed to mention that it takes a person to come up with the look and design it before a computer ever bytes into it. Ed was that man.
His new book "Layout and Composition for Animation" is loaded with his beautiful artwork and he offers invaluable insight into the layout process.

Here's a photo of Ed and me from not too long ago.
