Voices of The Golden Horseshoe Revue

Although Disneyland's "Golden Horseshoe Revue" took it's final bow in 1986, it still holds the Guinness world record for the most consecutive performances of any stage show in history. (The similar "Diamond Horseshoe Revue" is the Walt Disney World version.)  Several of the performers lent their voices to Disney park attractions and some are still heard there today!

In the photo below is Fulton Burley, the Irish Tenor of the show, who is largely remembered for his "Clancy Lowered the Boom" routine. Not only helped write "Walt Disney's Enchanted Tiki Room," but he performs the voice of Michael, the macaw who exclaims, "We forgot to wake up the glee club!" He reprised that role in the Magic Kingdom version, "Tiki Room Under New Management." Fulton was also heard for many years as the narrator of the Sailing Ship Columbia in Disneyland. "Ahoy shipmates!" As for that jacket he's wearing, it's safe and sound in my home. A treasured part of my Disneyland collection.

Wally Boag was the comedian who is still remembered for "spitting out his teeth" during the show's hilarious finale.  Wally helped write several park attractions. He contributed to the "Country Bear Jamboree" and the "Haunted Mansion" and was instrumental in "Walt Disney's Enchanted Tiki Room." Wally is the voice of Jose, the emcee of the Disneyland and Magic Kingdom versions of the "Tiki Room." He also provided the voice of Juan, the Barker Bird, who would entice Disneyland guests to come inside the "Tiki Room." He proved to be TOO popular, causing congestion on the walkway and was soon removed.

Betty Taylor, the classy Sluefoot Sue who is most remembered for venturing into the audience and talking with park guests. She still remembers that part of the show so fondly to this day. Betty's performed her theme song, "Won't You Come Home, Bill Bailey?" in the "Golden Horseshoe Revue" and as a gorgeous Audio Animatronic pig in Disneyland's carousel theater show "America Sings" (where "Innoventions" is today). Incidentally, she was never too fond of having her voice associated with a pig. Certainly, a graceful swan would have been much more appropriate... but not as funny!

Jay Meyer was the sub for Fulton Burley and in every show, performed a beautiful Irish medley and the beautiful "Too Ra Loo Ral," which happens to be the last song he ever sang in public. Although he was a sub, he performed the show regularly for fourteen years! Jay is not only heard, but still seen in the "Haunted Mansion" attractions internationally. He is a singing statue, and has a one line solo, "Starts to shriek!"

When Wally Boag retired, comedian Dick Hardwick took his place. He took over the "teeth spitting" duties but brought his own comedy routines to the show. Dick started as a musician in Disneyland and is still heard performing some of the music on Disneyland's Mark Twain riverboat. For many years, Dick was also the voice of the ship's captain.
